CHOOSING BOOKS

Let them choose!

The majority of parents want to encourage their child.  However, this can sometimes lead to parents
becoming anxious and, despite the best intentions pushing children too fast, too soon.  Therefore,
we often select books which are still too hard for them.

Children then lose interest and confidence.

Try to avoid saying things like:

'You've already read that one, it's far too easy'

'Clever boys like you don't read baby books like that'

No book is too easy!

Sometimes, reading easier books boosts a child's confidence as it helps them revise basic skills.

A wide variety of books ranging from fiction to non-fiction and reference books is important.
Non-fiction books often appeal more to boys but provide fun fact-finding exercises for all children
on subjects they are really interested in -

football  -  volcanos  -  computers  -  dancing  -  dinosaurs  -  cars

butterflies and insects  -  the ocean  -  trains  -  sharks  -  the solar system

wild animals  -  rocks and minerals  -  ancient egypt  -  battle ships

Not that book again!

It's natural for children to have a favourite book.  Let them read it again, and again, and again, and again...

However frustrating, it really doesn't matter.

If you gradually introduce new ones, they'll soon want to move on.
